Kids State Update: This past weekend the DWC sent 16 wrestlers to ISWA Folkstyle State (Pee Wee-Novice) and had 7 of them place in the top 8.  Winning championships were Evan Bates and Arturo “Junior” Zavala.  Taking 2nd were Lucas Davison, Sergio Lemley and Kaitlin Loehmer.  Alex Zavala took 4th while Noah Beller placed 8th.  Also making the trip were Zack Bell, Brandon Bolin, Steven Cunningham, Jr., Sam Goin, Gavin Layman, Sammy Oliver, Danny Tolin, Aidan Torres and Mike Zajicek.  Great finish to the folkstyle season guys!  Thank you to Elaine Lemley, Stacie Oliver and Brian “the Baker” Bolin for your help with the party on Saturday.  It was a lot of fun!

NCAA WRESTLING Tourney on TV:  The NCAA wrestling championships start on Thursday with the finals taking place on Saturday night.  The tournament will be televised on 3 different ESPN channels.  Thursday’s matches, beginning at 11 a.m., will be broadcast on ESPN3 while Friday and the majority of Saturday’s matches will be televised on ESPNU. The championship round is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN.  The Big Ten Championships are scheduled to be re-broadcast Thursday on Big Ten Network too.

Another successful weekend: Congrats to the 24 boys who competed in theMunster tourney and the few who crossed theIllinois border on Sunday.  Though we still have lots to improve upon prior to State which is almost a month away we have been fighting very hard and showing good composure when we’re tested.

 This week: GOLD group practices tonight/Tuesday and Wednesday 5:30-6:30 @ CHS, Maroon goes tonight/Tuesday and Wednesday @ CHS from 6:30-8 AND FRIDAY @ CMS FROM 5:30-7.

 NO PARENTS IN CMS: due to a complaint from someone at CMS we must ask that all parents drop there sons off and do not enter the building at any time.  Confirming: no parents allowed in CMS while we are there practicing.

 Attendance: Please encourage your boys to attend all practices barring the obvious sickness, family obligations or academic issues that need attention.  We also would like to encourage our boys to participate in the local tourneys at a minimum and at the State finals.

Congrats to the boys for competing well at Penn and to Eli for doing well at Oak Park tourney!  The boys have been making great improvements and are representing the club and the plaid very well.

As for this Sunday 1/29 we will send a group to Munster and for those looking to mix it up we’re going to send a group to either Elmhurst or Argo/Summit Illinois (see http://ikwf.org/events.html) for event details.   

For those going to Munster they will be allowing us to do remote weigh-ins and pre-registration on Thursday.  If you’d like to participate in theMunster tourney bring a check for $15 to practice on Thursday made out to Munster Wrestling Club.  Also bring your USAW card and get your son weighed in after practice.  >>Note that Munster will wrestle PW-Intermediate @ 9am and start Novice-Cadet at 11:30 on Sunday<<  Plan to have your son at the meet no later than 30-minutes prior to his group’s start time.

We have had a couple boys with ringworm in our club as of late and are they are addressing the issue.  We are cleaning the mats after practices and need your help to keep skin disease risks to a minimum.  Your wrestler needs to follow these guidelines:

1) Shower in the morning

2) Wear clean clothes at every practice and do not walk on mats with shoes other than wrestling shoes

3) Shower ASAP when you get home: rinse thoroughly, shut water off, lather and then rinse. Use anti-bacterial soap daily and anti-fungal shampoo at least once a week.  (Head and shoulders is anti-fungal)

4) Don’t let sweaty clothes nor shoes sit in gym bag after practice.  Let shoes breath and wash clothes as soon as possible or at least let them air dry before putting them in the dirty laundry

5) As for washing clothes, don’t let clothes sit in washer after wash is done…get to dryer ASAP and dry thoroughly

6) Make sure towels air dry thoroughly after showering.  On the towel rack, don’t stack towels on top of one another nor let them sit in a pile.  Wash towels frequently and dry thoroughly.

7) As an extra step of vigilance you can wipe your son’s headgear and shoes down with disinfectant wipes such as the ones with Clorox bleach. 

Coach Joll will allow us to put our shoes/headgears in CHS’ Ozone machine (killer of bacteria and fungus) on Thursday.  If interested let coach Joll know and give him your gear to be Ozonated.

These trips are a great challenge and a lot of fun. In the younger division we placed 3^rd last year and narrowly missed taking 2^nd.  In order to be competitive in the team competition we need a good turn-out.

Parent’s meeting tomorrow/Thursday:  In between the Gold and Maroon group practices today 1/12 @ 6:30 we will be holding a parent’s meeting in advance of our DWC Tournament this coming Sunday 1/15 and to answer questions pertaining to the new season.  Please do what you can to make this meeting.

Friendship Dual Update:   Our first dual vs. Portage went well as we had many wrestlers get 2 matches and a good taste of live competition.  Please know that as we have these duals that we make our best effort to group the boys together according to weight and experience there will invariably be cases where we’re out-matched or
vice-versa.  Please help us keep the focus on putting forward a great effort while displaying good sportsmanship as oppose to focusing on winning.  With that approach the wins will come down the road.

Due to the fact that Laporte has a very small program we will not have a friendship dual with them on Thursday however we have invited them to practice with us.  Confirming:  no dual, just regular practice on Thursday with Laporte guys.  Our next dual will be next Tuesday 12/6 when we host Fairhaven in the field house.

The CHS Wrestling Team starts it’s season tomorrow morning @ 9am @ CHS Fieldhouse when it hosts the Super-Duals.  Please stop by to support the Trojans!

In addition the the Friendship Duals on 11/29, 12/1 and 12/15 as well as our Friendship Tournament on 12/18 I have added 3 other competition opportunities on 12/4 @ Nequa-Naperville, 12/11 @ Force Challenge-Plainfield, IL and 12/18 @ Lowell. While I encourage our wrestlers to get as much mat-time as they can I’d say that the 2 Illinois meets are best suited to the boys who want to be challenged. Please let me know whether or not you’ll attending either of those meets as I’ve reserved 10 spots for each and need to adjust if we’ll have more or less attend.

When we start back up in January we’re fielding both Middle School(grades 6-8) and Elementary (K-6th) Teams for the team tournies in Yorktown and Franklin, IN on 1/7 and 1/8. The Duneland Wrestling Club brought its largest group in years to ISWA’s Folkstyle State Championships in Indy this past weekend with 15 wrestlers making the trip!!  The club had 7 wrestlers place in the top 8 in their divisions with Andrew Davison winning the championship, Aidan Torres and Eli Pokorney placing 2^nd, Evan Bates and Vince Walton placing 3^rd, Noah Beller placing 5^th and Alex Zavala 8^th.  Also faring well for the team were Diego Lemley (3-2), Jack Walton (2-2),  Lucas Davison (2-2), Brandon Bolin (2-2), Ryan Callaway (1-2), Nate Beller (1-2), Nolan Walton and Sam Oliver.  The Duneland Wrestling Club now turns it focus to its Freestyle wrestling season.

• Next Tuesday the 22nd we go to Fairhaven one last time (no practice @ CHS) but this time we will start @ 6PM instead of 7…please arrive by 5:45.  The duals with them on the 15th were very well run and all boys got at least 3 matches (3-minute goes).  Fairhaven does have 6th-8th graders so this meet with be for both Maroon and Gold divisions.  Please let me know if you CANNOT MAKE THE FAIRHAVEN dual on the 22nd.
• Next Thursday and every Tues/Thurs after we will go back to our normal practice times @ CHS as the schedule page on the website shows.
• Remaining ISWA events will be Jimtown or Munster Rookie Rumble(1st or 2nd yr wrestlers only) on 2/27,  Hobart Meet on SAT 3/5 and then we head into the state tournaments on 3/12 for Pee-Wee through Novice and 3/19-20 for Schoolboy and up.  See http://www.iswa.com/iswa_events.htm for detailed info.

Just shooting out a quick message regarding coming events:

• Practice Monday and Weds this week at new times: Maroon 5-6:15 and Gold 6:30-8
• Thursday we will travel to Griffith for the last of the Elementary Wrestling Duals @ Griffith High School 600 N Wiggs St

• Inclement Weather: Know that it is Duneland Schools policy to cancel any activities in the school when school is cancelled for any reason such as THE BLIZZARD OF 2011!! It appears that as of 3:20 PM on Tuesday it looks like we’ll be off both school and practice. 
• Singlets are in and look great…get them to you next practice or @ Sunday’s meet.  Please make check to Duneland Wrestling Club for $40 if you ordered one but didn’t pay for it yet.
• Thursday’s Elementary Dual Cancelled: due to a scheduling conflict the planned Elementary Dual vs. Munster @ CHS has been cancelled and a make-up date is pending.
• Friendship Duals @ Fairhaven Added:  on Tuesday 2/15 @ 7PM and Tuesday 2/22 @ 6PM we will be holding practices or friendship duals @ Fairhaven Baptist Church which is right off of 49 just north of Hwy 94.  Address is 86 East Oak Hill Road.

• Next road-trip Friday 2/11: Thanks to all who made it up to Northwestern on Friday to watch the Hawkeyes put the hurt on the Wildcats.  We’re planning another trip on Friday 2/11 to watch the #3 Wisconsin Badgers vs. the Wildcats.
